Our Story Began At Mdzananda Animal Clinic

70% of Luna Cat Rescue Cats Come From Mdzananda Animal Clinic, the Remaining 30% Come From Other UnderSERVED Areas.

Mdzananda Animal Clinic in Khayelitsha is the only clinic in a township of 2.4 million people that offers full veterinary services to the members of the community. Although many stray animals are surrendered to them, Mdzananda doesn't have full shelter facilities to home these animals so they rely on partner organisations like Luna Cat Rescue to help them foster and find homes for these animals. It is Mdzananda policy that every animal they treat is sterilised to prevent further unwanted animals.

About our Founders —
Laura and Steffi

Luna Cat Rescue was founded by two cat-loving friends, Stefanie Bergmann and Laura Watkins, in June 2021. Previously, Steffi used to run the cat adoption and foster home program for Mdzananda Animal Clinic on a voluntary basis for over 2 years. This is when the foundation for the collaboration between the two organisations was laid. Steffi specialises in fostering bottle kittens and kittens that need intensive care. Laura started fostering for Mdzananda, working closely with Steffi, at the beginning of 2020 and has fostered many kittens and cats since then. After working together and developing a strong friendship, the idea of Luna Cat Rescue came to life!

Since then, the team has doubled. Jane Blyth is a neonatal kitten specialist who fosters some of our critical care kittens and bottle babies. She is part of the on-the-ground team supporting our foster homes. Vanessa Clark looks after our social media to drive adoptions, fostering and donations. She also fosters older kittens and teens.

Join Our Mission

Do you love cats? As well as adopting a cat or kitten, there are so many other ways we need your help to nurture and support these beautiful creatures. You can donate to us, foster kittens or cats, and like and share our message on social media. The more support we have, the more cats and kittens we can help.

Typically we spend R1,300 per cat/kitten on sterilisation, food, microchipping, and vaccinations. Given that our adoption fee is R950, we always need donations. Our banking details are below and we'd appreciate either a one-off, or ideally a more regular, donation to help us with our costs. We're a registered Public Benefit Organisation status (PBO number 930074422) which means that your donations to Luna Cat Rescue are tax deductible (in South Africa).

If you can’t commit to a cat long-term but would love to have feline company, why not apply to foster for us? That way you can help the cats and kittens with a soft landing before we find their forever homes. We're with our foster humans every step of the way, and will help you give your foster cat or kittens the best temporary home. Fill out the form below to apply and find out more.
